Moore County in North Carolina isn’t just about golf courses and pine trees—it’s full of fun, family-friendly activities that’ll keep the kids entertained and make some great memories! No matter where you’re living around Fort Liberty, Moore County is worth the visit!
1. Go Wild at the North Carolina Zoo
I know, I know… starting the list outside of Moore County. BUT this place is worth mentioning!! Just a short drive from Moore County in Asheboro, the North Carolina Zoo is a total hit for animal lovers of all ages. It’s the largest natural habitat zoo in the world, meaning you’ll see lions, elephants, and even polar bears in spacious enclosures that feel like their real homes. Don’t miss feeding the giraffes or climbing around the new treehouse play area—your kids will be talking about it for days! My kiddos especially loved the butterfly tent!
2. Hike and Explore at Weymouth Woods
Got some little adventurers? Head to Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve in Southern Pines. With its easy hiking trails, towering pines, and cool wildlife, it’s a great spot to let the kids burn off energy while learning a thing or two about nature. Check out the visitor center for fun exhibits and maybe even catch a ranger-led program.
3. Stroll Through Pinehurst Village
Pinehurst Village feels like something out of a storybook with its quaint shops, charming parks, and cute cafes. Take a leisurely stroll, let the kids play at Tufts Memorial Park, or hop on a family carriage ride to see the sights. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed afternoon with plenty of chances to grab a sweet treat.
4. Splash Around at Rassie Wicker Park Splash Pad
If you’re looking to beat the summer heat, the splash pad at Rassie Wicker Park in Pinehurst is where it’s at. With jets, sprinklers, and fountains, it’s basically a water playground that’ll keep the kids cool and happy. Plus, the park has playgrounds, walking trails, and picnic areas, so you can easily spend a whole day here.
5. Get Crafty at the Moore County Arts Council
For those creative kiddos (like my Connor), the Moore County Arts Council is a hidden gem offering art classes, workshops, and cool events for all ages. From painting to pottery, there’s always something going on to spark your child’s inner artist. Check out their calendar for family-friendly events, and maybe you’ll leave with a masterpiece!
6. Play Knight and Princess at Camelot Playground
Camelot Playground in Pinehurst is a whimsical wonderland where your little ones can climb castles, swing like knights, and slide down dragons (well, not literally, but it sure feels like it!). It’s designed with a medieval theme, so the kids can really let their imaginations run wild while you chill on a nearby bench. This park reminds me of one where I played as a girl, and my children absolutely love it here! When we lived in Raeford, I drove to this playground just so my kiddos could play somewhere new, and it was worth it!
7. Bike, Fish, and Picnic at Reservoir Park
Reservoir Park in Southern Pines is the perfect outdoor escape. Bike along the lake’s edge, or just take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the view. You can also try your luck fishing, paddle boarding, or kayaking! Pack a lunch, and you’ve got yourself the perfect family outing. They also have picnic tables with grills, restrooms, and a Disc Golf Course!
8. Step Back in Time at the Tufts Archives
For a little history mixed with fun, head to the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst. It’s all about the area’s unique history, including its famous golfing roots. Kids might enjoy checking out old photos and vintage gear, and you’ll get to learn a bit about how Pinehurst became the golf capital it is today.
9. Hit Up a Farmer’s Market
Round off your day with a trip to one of Moore County’s farmer’s markets. It’s a fantastic way to sample fresh local produce, snag some homemade jams, and browse local crafts. Grab a snack, pick up some fresh fruits, and enjoy the laid-back vibe—it’s the perfect way to wrap up your Moore County adventure.
